Detention is Taiwan’s first film to be adapted from a video game. Produced by 1 Production Film Co. and Filmagic Pictures, and starring Gingle Wang (王淨) and Tseng Ching-hua (曾敬驊) as the main characters, Fang Jui-hsin (方芮欣) and Wei Chung-ting (魏仲廷) respectively.
The story of “Detention” is set in the 1960s during the period when Taiwan is under martial law. Fang and Wei find themselves on a campus full of vengeful spirits, in search of their missing teacher Chang Ming-huei (張明暉), who was Fang’s lover and leader of a secret forbidden books club to which Wei had belonged.
The original 2D atmospheric horror side-scroller survival horror adventure video game was created and developed by Taiwanese game developer Red Candle Games for Steam.
The film adaptation seems to manage to capture the haunting atmosphere of the game. The film is scheduled for release on 20 September 2019.
